Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Thursday visited the family of musician and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh, who died in Delhi after an alleged brutal assault, and assured them that justice would be delivered and those responsible would face strict action.
The Chief Minister visited the bereaved family at Thangmeiband Lourung Purel Leikai in Imphal West and met Vikram Singh’s parents, wife and son. He expressed deep sorrow over the death and assured the family of all possible assistance and support from the state government.
Vikram Singh, 54, a respected guitarist and music teacher from Manipur, succumbed to injuries in Delhi on September 7 following an alleged assault at his residence in Kilokri village. He is survived by his wife, son and parents.
Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykisan Singh was also present during the Chief Minister’s visit.
The musician’s mortal remains were flown from Delhi to Imphal around noon on Wednesday, following which his last rites were performed in the state.
Speaking to the media, Vikram Singh’s brother Chongtham Vivek said the death had caused immense grief among the family, people of Manipur and the music fraternity. He urged the authorities to complete the investigation and legal proceedings at the earliest and ensure strict punishment for those responsible.
The incident has triggered widespread concern, with several organisations and individuals, including the Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD), condemning the killing and calling for a thorough probe into a possible racial motive behind the alleged attack.
Manipur CM Seeks Expedited Probe
On September 8, Chief Minister Khemchand Singh had written to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, urging her to expedite a high-level investigation into the alleged murder and ensure stringent prosecution of the accused.
He also suggested that, if circumstances warranted, the feasibility of transferring the case to an independent specialised agency such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) be explored to strengthen public confidence in the investigation.
Union Minister for Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju had earlier assured that strict action would be taken against those accused in the case. Rijiju said he had spoken to the Delhi Police, which assured him that a strong chargesheet would be filed within two weeks.
Expressing distress over Vikram Singh’s death, Rijiju said the safety and dignity of people from the Northeast, as well as every Indian, was non-negotiable. He also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.
