Jammu and Kashmir’s senior religious leader and chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, on Tuesday urged the Central government to reconsider its policy of banning social and political organisations in the Union Territory, calling for greater adherence to due process and dialogue.
Reacting to a public statement by the chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), Mirwaiz said the concerns raised were significant and urged New Delhi to listen to the people’s appeals.
“The public statement by JEI chief is concerning. It would be in the interest of peace and stability that New Delhi listen to people’s plea and revisit its policy of bans on social and political organisations in J&K, bringing an end to the harassment and intimidation that accompanies such restrictions,” he said in a post on X.
He also stressed that when such measures are challenged in court, legal proceedings should be allowed to continue fairly.
“Where these forced measures are challenged before the court of law, it is at least expected that due process is allowed to run its course fairly, without taking actions that render legal remedies meaningless,” Mirwaiz said.
He called for restraint in dealing with attached properties and institutions, saying they should be handled strictly in accordance with law and judicial process.
Mirwaiz further argued that a sustainable political process cannot be achieved by excluding genuine voices or replacing them with alternatives considered convenient.
He said those with “real social and political presence” should be given space and engaged through dialogue, adding that respect for the rule of law, fairness and meaningful political engagement were essential for achieving lasting peace.
His remarks came amid continuing legal and administrative action against banned organisations and properties attached in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has declared several organisations unlawful in J&K following intelligence inputs concerning their alleged involvement in secessionist and terrorist activities.
The banned organisations include Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Awami Action Committee (AAC), Jammu and Kashmir Ittehadul Muslimeen (JKIM), Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League (JKPFL), Dukhtaran-e-Milat (DEM), and terror outfits including Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Al-Badr, Al Umar Mujahideen and Jammu and Kashmir Islamic Front.
