The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), as part of its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jindal Lal while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 in Ludhiana.
The accused was posted as the Police Post Incharge of Eldeco Estate under Salem Tabri Police Station in Ludhiana.
Disclosing the development, an official spokesperson of the state Vigilance Bureau said Jindal Lal was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by a resident of Bhattian Bet village in Ludhiana district.
According to the spokesperson, the complainant’s wife had a dispute with her neighbour. Following the incident, a case was registered at Police Post Eldeco Estate on the basis of medical reports, with ASI Jindal Lal serving as the investigating officer.
The accused ASI had allegedly already received ₹50,000 from the complainant on the assurance of facilitating a compromise with the neighbour.
However, despite receiving the money, the ASI allegedly registered a case against the complainant’s wife. He subsequently demanded another ₹40,000 from the complainant for getting a cross-case registered against the other party.
The complainant recorded the conversation in which the alleged demand for the bribe was made and approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Ludhiana unit after refusing to pay the illegal gratification.
Acting on the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau laid a trap. The accused ASI was arrested red-handed while allegedly accepting ₹40,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station in Ludhiana.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
