India is aiming to scale up its space launch capabilities to 50 launches a year by 2030 as the country seeks to establish a robust commercial space ecosystem, Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) Chairman Pawan Goenka said on Sunday.
In a post on X, Goenka said the decision to open India’s space sector to private players five years ago was driven by two key objectives — enabling the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to pursue new frontiers and creating opportunities for private industry to expand its capabilities.
“Now comes the real test: scaling up. We have set ourselves an ambitious target of 50 launches a year by 2030,” Goenka said.
He stressed that achieving the target would require close cooperation between the government and private industry, as no single organisation could deliver such an expansion on its own.
Goenka also highlighted the rapid growth of India’s space startup ecosystem. From only a handful of companies five years ago, the sector now has more than 450 space startups working across areas including launch services, satellites and space-based applications.
“Today, we are seeing both take shape. EOS-05 is a major achievement by ISRO, and this is just the beginning,” he said.
The private sector, meanwhile, has moved beyond the prototype stage, with an Indian private company successfully demonstrating the capability to launch a rocket into orbit.
However, Goenka said the next major challenge would be scaling up operations and developing the infrastructure, technology and capabilities required to support a substantially higher launch frequency.
Reiterating the 2030 target, he said building the required capacity would depend on sustained collaboration between the government and private industry.
The expansion comes as India seeks to strengthen its position in the global space economy and create a larger role for domestic private companies in the sector.
