Kapurthala, September 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

In a startling case in Punjab’s Kapurthala, a family cremated a body they believed was that of their missing son, only to discover nearly 20 days later that he was alive and lodged in Central Jail, according to media reports.

The youth, identified as Ravi Kumar, had left his home on August 5 and failed to return. After searching for him without success, his father and brother approached Kapurthala City Police Station on August 11 and filed a missing person’s report.

Police subsequently informed the family that the burnt body of a young man had been recovered. Family members were shown photographs of the deceased and, along with relatives, identified the body as Ravi Kumar.

Believing their son had died, the family conducted his cremation on August 13.

The case took an unexpected turn on September 2 when an employee of Central Jail, Kapurthala, contacted the family and informed them that a man named Ravi Kumar was lodged there.

According to the report, Ravi Kumar had actually been arrested by Jalandhar Police around a month earlier in a case related to loitering and was subsequently lodged in the Central Jail.

The information initially left the family shocked and confused. However, when they visited the prison the following day, they were overjoyed to find Ravi Kumar alive.

The circumstances surrounding the identification and cremation of the unidentified burnt body, as well as how the family came to identify it as Ravi Kumar, remain unclear based on the available information.
