Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel paid an emotional tribute to Michael Schumacher at Monza on Sunday, driving the legendary Ferrari F2002 that carried Schumacher to his fifth world championship title.
Vettel took several demonstration laps around the Autodromo Nazionale Monza ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, waving to the packed stands as Ferrari fans, known as the Tifosi, cheered the former Red Bull driver.
The appearance brought back memories of Schumacher’s dominant years with Ferrari, with the unmistakable F2002 and its engine note adding to the nostalgia. Vettel also performed several donuts on the circuit before speaking to broadcasters about the significance of driving the iconic machine.
Vettel’s race suit carried a message dedicated to Schumacher: “For my friend Michael, there is still a race to win.”
Describing the experience, Vettel said he had “mixed feelings” because while the F2002 was a remarkable car to drive, its greater significance was that it belonged to Schumacher.
“On one hand, it is such a beautiful car to drive, such a beautiful piece of machinery, but much more than that, it is Michael’s car. He is not here today, but I felt him a lot in these laps, and I hope you heard him and felt him as well,” Vettel said.
The German, who retired from Formula 1, became emotional while thanking those who gave him the opportunity to drive the Ferrari.
“I love racing. I know I have quit racing, but in my heart, I am still a lover. I do deeply care for the sport, the cars, the fans and the Tifosi. Today is Michael’s moment, and we send all our love and emotions to him,” he said.
Schumacher has remained out of public view since suffering a serious skiing accident in December 2013 and continues his medical recovery.
Ferrari also marked Schumacher’s legacy at its home race with a special livery for its SF-26 cars driven by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
The Schumacher-inspired design features a predominantly red finish with white detailing, seven white stars on the nose representing his seven world titles, and a Michael Schumacher logo. Schumacher won five of his championships with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004.
Ferrari described the design as its Monza livery, saying it was “inspired by the lasting impact of Michael Schumacher on our team”.
