Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati, currently serving as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court, has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, according to an official communique.
Justice Bhati will succeed Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Kumar and is set to become the 39th Chief Justice of the High Court, which exercises jurisdiction over the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Born on September 21, 1970, Justice Bhati completed his B.A., LL.B. and LL.M. in Mercantile Law. He later earned a Ph.D. for his research on “Promotion & Seniority in Public Employment, its Changing Dimensions and Role of Supreme Court”.
He enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and practised extensively before the Rajasthan High Court. During his legal career, he handled a wide range of matters and remained actively involved in the legal fraternity in the state.
Before his elevation to the Bench, Justice Bhati served as the Additional Advocate General of Rajasthan. He was also associated with the Rajasthan High Court Lawyers’ Association and served as its President.
Justice Bhati was elevated to the Rajasthan High Court on November 16, 2016, marking the beginning of his judicial career.
His appointment as Chief Justice of the J&K and Ladakh High Court brings his judicial and legal experience to the administration of the institution, which handles cases and matters concerning both Union Territories.
The appointment comes as the High Court is presently functioning under an Acting Chief Justice, Justice Sanjeev Kumar.
