Filipino tennis star Alex Eala became emotional while reflecting on the overwhelming support she has received from the Filipino community during her US Open campaign and throughout her rise in the sport.
Eala’s US Open 2026 run ended in the third round after she lost a three-set thriller to Iva Jovic 5-7, 6-3, 5-7. The result came a year after Eala stunned 14th seed Clara Tauson in New York.
The 20-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough period, reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and producing a strong run during the North American hardcourt swing, including winning the Washington Open this year.
Asked about the support from Filipino fans, Eala struggled to put her emotions into words.
“It’s indescribable to sum up the support and how it makes me feel in just a few words. It’s a real privilege to experience this in a lifetime,” she said, as quoted by the US Open Press.
Reflecting on playing at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Eala said she was grateful for the opportunity to compete in such an environment, learn from every experience and continue doing what she loves.
“I’m really happy. I’m really lucky to have these opportunities, to have these people support me, and to be working hard, to be able to live this life how I’m living it,” she added.
Eala also reflected positively on her match against Jovic despite the disappointment of defeat. She said she had created opportunities and felt she had grown as a player since their previous meeting.
“I think I’m happy with the match, in general. Of course there is disappointment in losing, but yeah, trying to see the positive side,” Eala said, congratulating Jovic for fighting through the contest.
Eala will now turn her attention to the Asian Games rather than competing at the China Open, continuing a busy international season as she looks to build on her rapid progress.
