Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday claimed that its aerospace forces attacked a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer with several ballistic missiles, alleging that the vessels had harassed Iranian ships and taken part in a naval blockade against Iran.
The IRGC said in a statement published by its official news outlet, Sepah News, that the two US military vessels were damaged and subsequently fled the conflict zone. It warned that continued “hostile and aggressive” actions by the United States would invite “formidable” responses from Iran’s armed forces.
The claim followed an exchange of attacks involving Iranian and US-linked vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC Navy said on Saturday night that it had targeted three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and three US-affiliated vessels elsewhere, describing the action as retaliation for US strikes on Iranian tankers earlier that day.
According to the IRGC Navy, the three tankers targeted in the Strait of Hormuz were travelling through an “unauthorised” route, while the other three vessels were struck in separate locations.
The US military gave a different account. US Central Command said on X on Saturday that American forces had struck three Iranian crude-oil carriers after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles towards two US Navy warships operating in regional waters.
“A US aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer successfully evaded multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks. No American personnel were harmed,” US Central Command said.
In its latest statement, the IRGC maintained that its aerospace forces had fired several ballistic missiles at the US carrier and destroyer in the preceding hours. It also claimed that IRGC naval forces attacked a US Army unmanned surface vessel after it attempted to enter a protected area of the Strait of Hormuz.
The competing claims could not be independently verified from the information available in the source material.
