The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the licences of two food businesses in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district following enforcement inspections that found serious violations of food safety, hygiene, sanitation and compliance requirements.
The licences of Kailash Formulation and Sanecure Water Project have been suspended in the interest of public health and will remain suspended until further orders, FSSAI said on Sunday.
At Kailash Formulation, officials found the overall cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation of the premises unsatisfactory. The inspection also revealed inadequate hand-washing, changing and other hygiene facilities, while mandatory medical examination, inoculation and personal hygiene records of food handlers were unavailable.
The business was also found lacking laboratory test reports, calibration records, certificates of analysis (COAs), product control-sample records and other mandatory documentation.
Inspectors reported inadequate lighting, flaking plaster and paint, improper management of waste and old stock, and the absence of preventive maintenance and sewage-disposal records.
The assessment further found deficiencies involving packaging, raw materials and employee training. Food-grade certificates and migration reports for packaging materials, including PET bottles and caps, were not available. Based on the inspection report and supporting documents, FSSAI concluded that the premises had severe non-compliance with prescribed food safety, sanitary and hygienic standards.
At Sanecure Water Project, officials found poor hygiene and sanitation, inadequate pest-proofing and significant pest infestation. The premises also lacked adequate hand-washing and washroom facilities, while equipment and machinery were not being properly maintained. Rust and corrosion were observed on equipment.
Several compliance records were also missing, including a pest-control agreement, medical and inoculation records for food handlers, control-sample records, customer complaint records, corrective and preventive action (CAPA) records and vehicle hygiene checklists.
FSSAI further found that potable-water testing reports and certificates of analysis for raw materials and chemicals were unavailable, along with approved-vendor documentation. A copy of a water-testing laboratory record was also found to have been digitally edited or altered, the authority said.
