Actress Anushka Kaushik is set to celebrate the retro era of Hindi film music with a special tribute to legendary singer-composer Bappi Lahiri at a Dahi Handi celebration on Janmashtami.
Anushka will perform before an audience of nearly 2,000 people, presenting a retro-themed rendition of ‘Kaisi Hai Ye Shaam Aaj Ki’ as part of the musical celebrations.
Speaking about the tribute, Anushka said Bappi Lahiri’s music holds a special place in the hearts of audiences and expressed her honour at being able to celebrate his legacy through her performance.
“Bappi Da’s music has a very special place in all our hearts. His songs were not just music; they became memories for so many of us. I feel truly honoured to pay tribute to him through my performance,” she said.
Anushka said she hoped to recreate the energy and vibrancy associated with the retro era and encourage the audience to sing along with her. She added that performing before such a large crowd would make the occasion even more memorable.
She will share the stage with her co-star Abhijeet Nalawade for the performance, which is also expected to offer audiences a glimpse of the musical world of their upcoming film ‘The Mushrooms’ ahead of its song launch.
‘The Mushrooms’ is presented by Lasaki Mediaworks and directed by Srija Barua Nalawade. The performance of ‘Kaisi Hai Ye Shaam Aaj Ki’ by Anushka and Abhijeet will bring a distinct retro flavour to the Dahi Handi celebrations.
Bappi Lahiri, popularly known as Bappi Da and the ‘Disco King’, played a major role in popularising disco music in Indian cinema. His well-known songs include ‘Jimmy Jimmy Aaja’, ‘I Am A Disco Dancer’, ‘Pag Ghungroo Baandh’, ‘Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re’, ‘Inteha Ho Gayi Intezaar Ki’, ‘Chalte Chalte’ and ‘Tamma Tamma Loge’.
Lahiri died in Mumbai on February 15, 2022, aged 69. He had been suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and a recurrent chest infection.
