India on Friday advised its nationals in France, Italy and Belgium to remain vigilant amid ongoing protests, avoid areas witnessing demonstrations and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Indian missions in the three European countries were closely monitoring developments and maintaining regular contact with members of the Indian community.

Addressing a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Jaiswal urged Indian nationals to exercise caution while travelling outside and stay away from areas where protests were taking place.

“Our missions in France, Italy and Belgium are closely following the developments there. They are in regular touch with the community members,” he said, adding that Indians should remain vigilant and follow advisories issued by the respective governments.

Jaiswal said the Indian embassies in France and Italy had also issued specific advisories for Indian nationals. He reiterated that the government remained committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of Indians living or travelling abroad.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the Indian Embassy in France issued a travel and safety advisory for Indian nationals and those planning to visit the country following protests over the rising cost of living that reportedly escalated into violent clashes.

According to the information shared in the advisory, the demonstrations began in late September amid concerns over poor conditions in schools and teacher shortages before expanding into wider anti-government protests. Rising living costs, high fuel prices and public sector budget cuts were among the issues fuelling the demonstrations against the administration of French President Emmanuel Macron.

“In view of the recent developments and localised curfews imposed in France, please remain vigilant and exercise due caution,” the embassy said in a post on X.

It also urged Indian nationals to avoid large gatherings and crowded places where protests were taking place and to follow instructions and advisories issued by French authorities.

The MEA reiterated its advice for Indian nationals in the affected countries to prioritise their safety, remain alert to local developments and comply with official guidance.
