Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Friday questioned the BJP-led government over remarks by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Kapur regarding Chinese troops along the Arunachal Pradesh border, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of focusing on criticism of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi instead of taking responsibility for national security.
The controversy erupted after Kapur said on Thursday that face-offs with Chinese troops had occurred at several locations along the border in Arunachal Pradesh in recent days and that the situation was continuing.
Speaking to IANS, Shrinate accused the government of yielding to China and questioned the pace of modernisation of the ITBP.
Referring to the Galwan clash, she alleged that China had been given a clean chit despite the martyrdom of Indian soldiers. She also questioned who was responsible for ensuring that the ITBP’s capabilities matched those of China, saying the responsibility rested with the Prime Minister.
Shrinate further criticised Modi for targeting the Congress and Rahul Gandhi, arguing that his statements on national security undermined the concerns raised by the defence forces.
CPI-M leader Hannan Mollah also said the government was responsible for addressing the situation along the border.
Mollah said the reported face-offs affected the lives and security of ordinary people in Arunachal Pradesh, adding that the government needed to take steps to resolve the issue.
He said tensions between two countries could not be resolved by the public and called on their leadership to pursue diplomatic and political engagement.
Meanwhile, CPI MP P. Sandosh Kumar said his party stood with the government and the armed forces on the issue of territorial integrity, while stressing the importance of dialogue.
“Our territorial integrity must be protected at any cost,” he told IANS, adding that India should take the initiative to encourage bilateral discussions and prevent any escalation of tensions.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police S.P. Vaid sought to clarify the ITBP chief’s remarks, describing China as a “bully” that pressures its neighbours and seeks to expand its territorial claims.
Vaid said the remarks should be understood in the context of China’s actions along its borders and did not necessarily mean that Chinese forces had occupied Indian territory.
Referring to the situation in Ladakh in previous years, he said India was responding to Chinese actions in a manner that Beijing would understand.
