US President Donald Trump has demanded that Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar resign from the House of Representatives, alleging that she used a different name to enter Congress and renewing accusations surrounding her former marriage. Omar has denied the allegations, while her office has dismissed Trump’s claims as false and politically motivated.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Omar’s actual name was Ilhan Nur Said Elmi rather than Ilhan Abdullahi Omar, the name under which she was elected to Congress.
“Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must immediately resign from Congress,” Trump wrote, while also calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson to act.
Trump further asserted that Republicans had effectively gained a House seat, although his demand does not itself remove Omar from office.
The controversy gained fresh attention after a federal court filing submitted on Wednesday by the office of US Attorney Jeanine Pirro identified the congresswoman as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” According to Newsweek, the filing related to efforts to keep materials sealed in connection with a federal search warrant involving Omar’s Washington residence.
Trump also repeated his demand at a campaign rally in Iowa on Thursday, alleging that Omar had used a false name when taking office.
Omar’s spokesperson rejected the accusations, telling Fox News Digital: “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.” The spokesperson described the allegations as a “desperate smear” and criticised media organisations for continuing to publicise them.
The dispute also involves Omar’s former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom critics have alleged is her biological brother. Omar rejected the allegation during an interview with MS NOW’s Chris Hayes on Wednesday.
Asked whether she was related to Elmi, she replied, “Not to my knowledge.”
Conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly added to the controversy on Friday, claiming that the Justice Department apparently possessed DNA evidence related to the allegation. However, no DNA findings were publicly presented in the supplied material to substantiate his claim. O’Reilly also called for due process, writing that the facts should be allowed to emerge.
Omar, who was born in Somalia, became a US citizen in 2000 at the age of 17 after her father was naturalised, according to the supplied reports. She is a prominent progressive Democrat and has frequently clashed with Trump over immigration, race and other political issues.
Under the US Constitution, a sitting member of the House of Representatives can be expelled only with the support of two-thirds of the chamber. Trump’s demand does not constitute a formal removal from Congress.
