US President Donald Trump has alleged widespread voter fraud in California, claiming that the number of potentially fraudulent votes could run into hundreds of thousands, while also questioning election practices in Minnesota and other states.
Speaking to reporters on the White House South Lawn before leaving for a campaign rally in Florida on Friday, Trump referred to an initial figure of 20,000 allegedly fraudulent votes in California and suggested the number could be substantially higher.
“20,000 absolutely fraudulent in California for voting,” Trump said, before speculating that the figure could reach 100,000 or between 300,000 and 500,000.
Trump did not present evidence during the exchange to substantiate the allegations or provide details about the votes he was referring to.
He also criticised voting practices in California and Minnesota, describing both states as corrupt, and extended his criticism to several other states.
The remarks came as Republicans and Democrats stepped up campaigning ahead of the November midterm elections, in which control of Congress is at stake.
Trump was also asked about high early-voting levels in states including Texas, Ohio and North Carolina, which are important to Republican efforts to retain control of the Senate.
He acknowledged that the political implications of early voting were unclear, saying it was difficult to determine which party was benefiting from the turnout.
The President nevertheless expressed confidence in Republican prospects, citing what he described as strong enthusiasm at recent campaign rallies, including an appearance in Iowa.
However, he did not provide figures showing how early votes were divided between the two parties.
His comments focused both on election-integrity allegations and the uncertainty surrounding the partisan impact of early voting ahead of the November polls.
