A bomb threat written on a piece of tissue paper was discovered at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Friday, prompting the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and a bomb squad to launch an intensive search of the premises, officials said.
According to reports, cleaning staff found the handwritten note in a women’s restroom at the airport. The note warned that a bomb had been planted at Gate Number 30.
The discovery caused panic among the workers, who immediately alerted senior officials. Security personnel swiftly cleared the crowd from the affected entrance, while the bomb squad and CISF personnel searched the area and other parts of the airport for suspicious objects.
The airport was reportedly witnessing heavier-than-usual passenger traffic following the Durga Puja holidays.
As of the latest reports, CISF personnel and officials from the Airport Police Station had not found anything suspicious. The police station falls under the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar City Police in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.
Police are questioning the cleaning staff who first discovered the note and are investigating who may have been in or around the restroom before and after the discovery. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events and identify the person responsible for leaving the note.
Security has been heightened across the airport following the incident. There were no reports of any disruption to flight services at the time of reporting.
This is the second bomb threat scare at Kolkata airport this month. On October 8, airport authorities received a similar threat via email. A thorough search was conducted at the time, but no suspicious object was found.
