India is expected to develop its own globally competitive smartphone brands by 2028, with mobile phones designed, manufactured and branded domestically, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday.
Addressing the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi, Vaishnaw expressed confidence that India would achieve its own “Apple and Samsung moment” in the smartphone industry, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its electronics manufacturing and design capabilities.
“This is 23 October 2026. Please note it: 23 October 2028. You will have Indian-designed, Indian-manufactured, Indian-branded mobile phones,” the minister said, setting out his target for the emergence of indigenous smartphone brands.
Explaining the technological challenges involved in designing a smartphone from scratch, Vaishnaw highlighted the need to integrate numerous advanced components into a compact device.
These include radio frequency communication systems, antennas, processors, memory, camera modules, displays, passive components and power management systems. All must function together while meeting requirements related to weight, energy efficiency and overall performance.
The minister described smartphone design as an extremely complex engineering task because of the need to accommodate these technologies within a small form factor while ensuring efficient power management and component integration.
Vaishnaw also outlined the government’s efforts to encourage domestic design capabilities, saying the initiative began several years ago with a challenge to Indian engineers and technology companies to develop printed circuit board (PCB) designs for mobile phones.
“Three years back we gave this challenge to Indian designers: why can’t you design the PCB, which is the motherboard of a mobile phone?” he said.
The initiative reflects the government’s push to expand India’s role beyond manufacturing electronics to developing the underlying designs and technologies needed for globally competitive products.
Vaishnaw’s announcement sets a two-year target for Indian-designed, Indian-manufactured and Indian-branded smartphones to emerge by October 2028.
