Indian-American Republican Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign for Ohio governor reported $41.3 million in outstanding loans owed to the candidate, while Democratic rival Amy Acton raised more than twice as much as him during the latest reporting period, highlighting the financial pressures and intensifying competition in the race.
Campaign finance filings covering the period through October 14 showed Acton raised $3.9 million and had $3.6 million in cash on hand. Ramaswamy raised $1.5 million and reported $2.4 million remaining, according to figures reported by State Affairs.
Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate seeking his first elected office, reported spending $51.2 million. Media purchases accounted for $28.5 million, while digital consulting cost another $7.3 million. His filing also listed $5 million in additional income from the candidate and $41.3 million in outstanding loans owed to him by the campaign.
Acton, who secured the Democratic nomination without a primary contest, reported spending $26.3 million, including $18.5 million on media advertising and $2.2 million on digital advertising.
Despite Acton’s fundraising advantage, Republicans and their allies have maintained a substantial lead in advertising expenditure. State Affairs, citing AdImpact, reported that Republican groups had spent $143.9 million on advertising in the race, compared with $45 million by Democrats. Ramaswamy also added $2.8 million in future advertising reservations, taking his total bookings to $14.8 million.
The race has also become embroiled in controversy over a $4 million Ramaswamy campaign advertisement featuring Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur. Ramaswamy defended the advertisement during a Republican Party bus tour, while outgoing Republican Governor Mike DeWine criticised it as wrong and called for its removal.
The University of Virginia’s Sabato’s Crystal Ball shifted its rating on October 22 from “Toss-up” to “Leans Democratic.”
Ohio voters will choose their next governor on November 3.
