Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Friday moved a resolution in the Punjab Legislative Assembly seeking the suspension of Congress legislator Sukhpal Singh Khaira for the remainder of the ongoing session over his alleged use of derogatory language and disruption of House proceedings.

Cheema accused Khaira of using objectionable remarks, challenging the authority of the Chair and deliberately disrupting legislative proceedings, resulting in the wastage of valuable House time and undermining the dignity of the Assembly.

Addressing the House, Cheema said the remarks had drawn strong objections from members, particularly because of their alleged impact on the dignity and self-respect of Punjab’s working class and the Scheduled Caste community.

He highlighted the contribution of labourers to the state’s progress and prosperity, saying elected representatives had a responsibility to respect their hard work, integrity and role in society.

Cheema said comments demeaning individuals or communities on the basis of caste, social status or economic background were unacceptable. He urged all legislators to maintain decorum and avoid remarks that could hurt the sentiments of marginalised communities.

Referring to efforts to eliminate caste-based discrimination and promote social equality, the minister said public representatives must stand united against discriminatory language and conduct.

Cheema also praised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government for its decision to provide monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 to eligible women, describing the initiative as a step towards strengthening the financial security and self-reliance of underprivileged women.

He urged the Assembly to send a clear message that disrespect towards labourers, the Dalit community and other marginalised sections would not be tolerated.

The minister also proposed a condemnation motion against the Congress over its stance. The resolution seeking Khaira’s suspension for the remainder of the session was put to a vote and passed unanimously by the Speaker, according to the report.
