Former actress Somy Ali has come out in support of Govinda amid the actor’s ongoing public spat with his wife, Sunita Ahuja, becoming the first of his co-stars to publicly defend him.
Somy took to Instagram on Sunday and shared a collage of throwback photographs featuring herself with Govinda. In a lengthy note, she recalled her professional and personal association with the actor and praised his talent and humility.
Calling Govinda, fondly known as Chichi, one of the “greatest talents” in the Hindi film industry, Somy said he was also among the most humble actors she encountered during her time in the industry.
The controversy intensified after Sunita publicly criticised Govinda in connection with the promotion of his upcoming film. She referred to actress Komal as his “sugar daddy” after the actor was spotted with her. Sunita had previously accused Govinda of having an affair with Komal and also questioned the actor’s decision to appear alongside a younger actress.
However, Somy defended Govinda’s decision to continue working with younger co-stars, arguing that age should not determine an actor’s professional opportunities.
“I have immense respect for both Chichi and Sunita. However, there is nothing ageist about an actor accepting a role with a younger actress,” Somy said.
She added that talent does not have an expiration date and said actors should be respected for continuing to work, particularly when opportunities become difficult to find.
“An actor’s worth isn’t determined by his age or by the age of his co-star. It’s determined by his talent, professionalism, and willingness to keep going,” she said.
Somy further argued that every actor deserves an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and that age should never be used to demean someone trying to earn a living and pursue their profession.
“Perhaps the most admirable thing about an actor is his refusal to give up when the industry or others start telling him he’s too old,” she added.
