Jan Suraaj leader Prashant Kishor formally took oath as the newly elected MLA from Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency on Monday, marking his entry into the state Legislative Assembly.
Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar administered the oath to Kishor in his chamber as the House is currently not in session. The monsoon session has concluded, while the winter session is scheduled for a later date.
Kishor arrived at the Assembly accompanied by senior Jan Suraaj leaders and supporters. With the oath-taking, he is now eligible to participate in legislative proceedings and discharge his responsibilities as an elected representative.
The Bankipur by-election was held on July 30, with the results declared on August 3. Kishor defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,246 votes. The RJD candidate finished third and forfeited the security deposit.
Following his victory, Kishor had said that people in Bankipur would begin seeing visible changes within two to three months. He outlined employment, education, ration distribution and social security as key priorities.
Among his commitments is an effort to facilitate private-sector employment for 10,000 young people. He has also promised assistance for children seeking admission to private schools and improvements in the ration-card system within three months.
Kishor has additionally proposed a monthly pension of Rs 1,100 for people aged 60 and above.
Beyond his responsibilities in Bankipur, Jan Suraaj is preparing for the upcoming Teacher and Graduate constituency elections to the Bihar Legislative Council as well as the Panchayat elections in the state. Kishor is also expected to undertake another statewide tour as the organisation seeks to expand its political presence.
With Monday’s oath-taking, Kishor has formally transitioned from electoral campaigning to legislative and constituency-level responsibilities.
