MP: ASI allegedly opens fire during land dispute, one killed and two injured

A land dispute in Bilalkhedi village of Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district turned violent on Sunday after an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), posted in neighbouring Shajapur district, allegedly opened fire with his licensed 12-bore gun, killing one person and critically injuring two others.

The accused, identified as ASI Dilip Prajapati, was reportedly involved in a heated confrontation between two groups over a long-standing disagreement related to land measurement.

According to preliminary information, the two sides exchanged abuses before the dispute escalated into a physical altercation. During the confrontation, Prajapati allegedly fired several rounds. One bullet struck a man in the chest, killing him on the spot, while two others sustained serious injuries.

The injured were initially taken to a Primary Health Centre and later referred to Shujalpur hospital for further treatment, police sources said. The deceased was sent for a post-mortem examination.

The incident triggered panic in the village, with residents fleeing the area. A bystander reportedly recorded the firing and the ensuing commotion on video, and the footage later circulated widely on social media.

After receiving information, police from Talen police station reached the spot. Prajapati was allegedly detained while attempting to flee on a motorcycle. His licensed firearm was seized.

Police have registered a case against him on charges related to murder and attempt to murder. Investigators are questioning the ASI to determine his exact role in the dispute and whether he had any personal interest in the land-related matter.

Security personnel have been deployed in and around Bilalkhedi to prevent further escalation. Relatives of the injured have demanded strict action against the accused.

Rajgarh Superintendent of Police Amit Tolani has ordered a detailed investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the dispute arose over land measurement, although police are examining all aspects of the incident.
