Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey has revealed that his 2003 romantic comedy ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ continues to generate more residual income for him than any other film in his career.
McConaughey, known for films and shows including ‘Interstellar’ and ‘True Detective’, starred opposite Kate Hudson in the Donald Petrie-directed rom-com, which became one of his defining films in the genre.
Appearing on Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, the 56-year-old actor called the film his favourite romantic comedy and said its enduring popularity has continued to translate into substantial residual payments.
“‘How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ is the gift that keeps on giving. Probably my favorite rom-com I’ve done, and a lot of people love that rom-com. And it still pays the best mailbox money of any film I’ve ever done. By far. By lengths,” McConaughey said.
He recalled that the film’s residual payments followed a noticeable annual pattern during the DVD and cable era, with broadcasters and audiences returning to the movie around Valentine’s Day.
“When it used to be just DVDs or cable, every March I’d get a big check because, Valentine’s Day,” he said.
McConaughey added that the film has become an enduring title within the romantic-comedy genre.
“‘How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ — that’s a real anchor in the rom-com genre through time,” he said.
In the film, Hudson plays Andie Anderson, a magazine columnist who sets out to write an article about how to make a boyfriend leave within 10 days. McConaughey portrays advertising executive Ben Barry, who simultaneously makes a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him within the same period.
