A couple was injured after being attacked by a pitbull while visiting a house for rent in Patiala’s Ghuman Nagar locality, with CCTV footage of the incident circulating widely on social media and sparking renewed concerns over public safety.
The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday evening when Ankit Sabharwal and his wife, Shifali, visited the locality with a property dealer to inspect the rental property.
According to Ankit, the dog rushed out as soon as the property gate was opened and attacked his wife. He alleged that the pitbull bit her several times, causing serious injuries to her arm and other parts of her body. She was subsequently admitted to a private hospital, where she underwent surgery.
Ankit was also injured while trying to rescue his wife, suffering bite wounds to his legs and back.
The CCTV footage purportedly shows the dog repeatedly attacking the couple as residents rush to their aid. The victims can be seen attempting to escape while neighbours try to drive the animal away.
A woman carrying a stick is seen emerging from the house and attempting to intervene but is unable to stop the attack. Several other residents subsequently arrive with sticks and manage to separate the dog from the couple.
Ankit said he had informed the police and demanded action against those responsible for allegedly failing to keep the dog under control.
Reacting to the incident, Patiala Mayor Kundan Gogia said the Municipal Corporation was considering restrictions on keeping aggressive dog breeds as pets within city limits. He said the matter would be discussed at a House meeting and a special resolution could be introduced.
The incident has renewed concerns over pet ownership and public safety in Patiala. The city witnessed another reported dog attack just days earlier, when a young girl was allegedly attacked by a stray dog in Guru Nanak Nagar on August 9.
Residents have called for stronger measures to prevent dangerous dog attacks and ensure responsible pet ownership.
