Adhikari orders fresh probe into alleged hurried cremation of RG Kar rape-murder victim

Kolkata, August 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday ordered a fresh state police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cremation of the woman doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.

The announcement came at a programme held in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district to remember the postgraduate trainee doctor, whose death had triggered nationwide protests and outrage.

The doctor’s body was recovered from a seminar room at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. She was later found to have been raped and murdered.

Allegations had subsequently emerged that the post-mortem, inquest and cremation were carried out in haste. The victim’s family had also raised questions about the circumstances in which her body was taken to the Panihati crematorium and cremated.

Adhikari said the state police would separately examine the circumstances surrounding the cremation while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its court-monitored probe.

He specifically referred to the alleged roles of former Trinamool Congress legislator Nirmal Ghosh and two others, Somnath Dey and Sanjeev Mukherjee, and directed the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate to initiate the necessary legal process.

The Chief Minister said investigators would examine why no cremation charge was reportedly collected and why the cremation documents allegedly did not carry the signature of a family member.

The fresh state-level probe comes against the backdrop of a Calcutta High Court-directed CBI investigation into the sequence of events surrounding the case, including the period from the victim’s dinner on August 8, 2024, until her cremation the following day. The court has also directed a CBI Special Investigation Team to examine allegations of evidence tampering and concerns raised by the victim’s family.

Earlier, West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee had said that the state Health Department would also examine aspects of the case concerning the handling of the incident and share its findings with the CBI.

The renewed probes are focused on allegations concerning the handling of the crime scene, the investigation and the circumstances surrounding the victim’s cremation.
