Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medallists and congratulated the athletes for their historic performances in Glasgow across boxing, judo, athletics and para-athletics.
Sharing a message on Instagram, Modi said, “Those who play, will flourish. Always cheer for Bharat. Bharat Mata Ki Jai!”
India finished fourth in the overall medal standings at the Commonwealth Games with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — despite competing in a significantly reduced programme that did not include medal-rich disciplines such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting.
Boxing emerged as one of India’s strongest disciplines, with the contingent winning seven gold and three silver medals. The gold medallists were Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (51kg), Priya Ghanghas (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Sachin Siwach (60kg) and Ankush Panghal (80kg).
Jadumani Singh (55kg), Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) and Narender Berwal (90+kg) secured silver medals. The seven golds also marked India’s best-ever performance by women boxers at the Commonwealth Games.
Sakshi Chaudhary said the interaction with the Prime Minister was a memorable experience for the medallists.
“We feel extremely proud, and it was a wonderful experience meeting him. He is very humble, and we were very happy to meet him,” she said.
India’s judo contingent also registered its best-ever Commonwealth Games showing, winning four medals — two gold, one silver and one bronze — from 12 events. The tally improved on the three medals, with no gold, won in 2022.
Khelo India athletes Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh created history by winning India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medals in judo. Asmita became the first Indian woman judoka to claim Games gold, while Harsh achieved the feat in the men’s category.
Athletics contributed 10 medals, including five silver and five bronze. Gulveer Singh created another milestone by becoming the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games, taking silver in the men’s 10,000m and bronze in the 5,000m.
