Former India spinner Anil Kumble on Sunday marked 36 years since his international debut, recalling the August 9, 1990 Test against England in Manchester that marked the beginning of a remarkable career.
Kumble, who received his India Test cap as the country’s 192nd Test player, took Allan Lamb’s wicket during the match and went on to become India’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.
“It was 36 years ago today that I received my first Test Cap as player number 192 for India. Taking the wicket of Allan Lamb was the start of a truly special journey, one that I cherish deeply to this day. I am incredibly grateful for this journey and everyone who has been a part it,” Kumble wrote on X.
Making his debut in the second Test of India’s series against England at Old Trafford, Kumble bowled 43 overs in England’s first innings and returned figures of 3/105, with Lamb among his wickets. He bowled another 17 overs in the second innings without adding to his tally.
Kumble went on to claim 619 wickets in 132 Tests, the highest by an Indian bowler in the format. He also took 337 wickets in 271 ODIs, finishing his international career with 956 wickets across formats.
One of the defining moments of his career came in the 1999 Delhi Test against Pakistan, when Kumble became only the second bowler after England’s Jim Laker to take all 10 wickets in an innings.
Known for his accuracy, variations in pace and ability to maintain relentless pressure, Kumble became the leader of India’s bowling attack and played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
His contribution to Indian cricket continued after retirement. Kumble served as India’s head coach from 2016 to 2017, during which the team secured Test series victories against the West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia.
He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2015, further recognising his outstanding contribution to the sport.
