Agra Police have busted a fake call centre allegedly involved in duping around 2,500 people across 15 states on the pretext of providing jobs, arresting four people in connection with the cyber fraud, officials said on Sunday.
The arrests were made during a joint operation by the counter-intelligence team, cyber surveillance team and personnel from Tajganj Police Station.
Agra Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) Aditya Kumar said the accused allegedly operated a fraudulent recruitment network through a company that did not legally exist.
According to the police, the accused followed a three-stage process to cheat job seekers. They initially contacted potential victims claiming that vacancies were available and asked them to pay registration fees through QR codes or UPI.
Once the victims were persuaded, they were allegedly asked to pay around Rs 8,800 for positions such as supervisor or guard. They were subsequently asked to pay another Rs 10,000 for a joining letter, which was also fake.
Police said the accused had allegedly been operating the fraud from Agra for around two years and were also suspected of involvement in cyber crimes in other parts of the country.
Of the four arrested, one is from Bihar and has a previous criminal case registered against him, while another is from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh. The other two accused are women from Agra.
Police recovered 10 mobile phones, 35 bank passbooks, several cheque books, 28 ATM cards, eight SIM cards, seven Aadhaar cards, six PAN cards, two voter ID cards, 12 QR codes, a laptop and a desktop computer, among other items.
DCP Kumar said further investigation was underway to establish the backward and forward linkages of the operation, including how the accused obtained victims’ contact details and how the money generated through the alleged fraud was subsequently used.
