India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has expressed confidence that several bilateral issues between New Delhi and Dhaka can be resolved if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman meet, describing both leaders as “people’s persons”.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a ‘Children Playing Area’ at the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Dhaka on Sunday, Trivedi said a meeting between the two leaders could help address outstanding concerns.
“I listened to his (PM Rahman) speeches many times…. He is a people’s person, our Prime Minister (Modi), too. I think when two leaders meet, a lot of problems are sorted out. I have full confidence,” Trivedi said, according to Bangladeshi media outlet United News of Bangladesh (UNB).
The Indian envoy emphasised that the people of the two countries remain connected and expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations.
“I am very confident. There is nothing negative. Things remain positive,” he said.
The comments come amid efforts by India and Bangladesh to maintain engagement at the leadership and diplomatic levels. India said on Tuesday that Rahman has been invited to attend the outreach session of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi in September in his capacity as the current Chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).
BIMSTEC comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand, linking South Asia with Southeast Asia through cooperation across multiple sectors.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said last week that a formal invitation had already been extended to Rahman after he assumed office in February 2026. Similar invitations have been extended to leaders of other regional groupings, he added.
On July 29, Trivedi met Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and reaffirmed India’s commitment to a “positive, constructive and forward-looking partnership” with Dhaka based on mutual interests and benefits.
The Indian High Commission said Trivedi also met Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, with discussions focusing on strengthening bilateral ties.
