Actor Bhumi Pednekar has strongly condemned the rape and death threats allegedly directed at a young girl who recently participated in a protest, saying such abuse is unacceptable and can have a lasting impact on a person’s mental health.
Sharing a video message on social media, Bhumi urged people to stop harassing individuals over differences of opinion and appealed for empathy in public discourse.
“I saw a video on the internet where a young girl who was part of the protest was giving an interview. She looked visibly broken and shaken. Since a video of her went viral, she has been receiving continuous rape threats and death threats,” Bhumi said.
She further claimed that not only the young protester but also her mother and other family members had been subjected to online abuse.
Calling the situation deeply disturbing, the actor said, “We cannot bully a young girl. We cannot create a fear psychosis in a young child’s mind simply because we disagree with her opinion.”
Reflecting on her own experiences as a woman and a public figure, Bhumi said she understood the emotional toll such harassment can take.
“As women, we face a great deal of harassment. As a public figure, I have gone through similar experiences, and I know how deeply and permanently it can affect someone’s mental health,” she said.
Concluding her message, Bhumi appealed for unity and respectful dialogue, saying everyone ultimately wants the country’s progress and that meaningful change can only come through constructive engagement rather than intimidation.
