Iran and Oman have concluded several rounds of technical discussions aimed at ensuring the safe movement of vessels through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran describing the talks as constructive and forward-looking.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the meetings were held in Tehran on Friday and Saturday at the level of Deputy Foreign Ministers. According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, the two sides discussed shared principles and practical mechanisms to facilitate secure maritime traffic while respecting the sovereign rights of both coastal nations.
Baqaei said the Omani delegation departed Tehran on Saturday after the conclusion of the talks, adding that technical and political consultations between the two countries would continue. He also stated that there had been no change in the current status of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is among the world’s most critical maritime trade routes, serving as a key transit corridor for global oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
The bilateral discussions come against the backdrop of heightened tensions in West Asia following recent military exchanges between the United States and Iran.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the American naval blockade against Iran remains fully operational. In a statement posted on social media platform X, CENTCOM claimed that as of July 25, US forces had redirected 12 commercial vessels attempting to reach Iran, disabled two vessels that allegedly failed to comply with instructions, and boarded two others for verification.
CENTCOM also said US forces had completed a verification boarding of the Comoros-flagged tanker M/T Charminar in the Arabian Sea before allowing it to continue its voyage.
Additionally, the command stated that US forces disabled the Mozambique-flagged tanker M/T Lavine in the Gulf of Oman on July 24 after its crew allegedly attempted to breach the blockade despite repeated warnings. According to CENTCOM, the vessel is no longer heading towards Iran.
The US military command maintained that its forces remain on high alert and prepared to conduct further operations in the region if required.
