Kolkata, October 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

At least three people were killed and three others critically injured after a motorcycle and a scooter collided on the Haldia-Mecheda state highway in the Shantipur area under Kolaghat police station limits in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district early Saturday, officials said.

The accident occurred at around 3 a.m. The injured were rushed to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment in critical condition.

A district police officer said the police received information about the accident around 3 a.m. and rushed to the spot to rescue the injured.

“We received information of an accident at around 3 a.m. We went to the spot and rescued the injured and sent them to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital. Some of them had died. Two two-wheelers have been brought to the police station. Investigation is underway,” the officer said.

According to local sources, the motorcycle and scooter riders were out to see Durga Puja idols when the collision occurred. Darkness on the Haldia-Mecheda state highway is suspected to have contributed to the accident, although the exact cause is yet to be established.

The impact was so severe that both two-wheelers were badly twisted in the collision, local sources said.

Residents rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts after learning about the accident. Police personnel from Kolaghat police station also reached the spot and, with the help of local residents, shifted the injured to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital.

One of the deceased was a resident of Ramchandrapur under Kolaghat police station, while the other two belonged to Srikrishnapur under Nandakumar police station limits.

Police sources also indicated that none of the riders was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision to determine its precise cause.

The accident disrupted traffic on the Haldia-Mecheda state highway, which remained blocked for some time. Police personnel later took charge of the situation and worked to restore traffic movement.

The deaths of three people in the early-morning accident have cast a pall of grief over the area, as the injured continue to receive medical treatment.
