The Angamaly Magistrate Court on Saturday rejected the bail applications of three accused in the Nedumbassery Mini Cooper crash that claimed three lives, with the prosecution arguing that the investigation had reached a crucial stage.
The court denied bail to Suhail Sajeev, who was driving the car, and Ninav and Ameer Joel, who were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The first accused faces a charge of culpable homicide, while the other two have been charged with abetment.
The accident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Cochin International Airport, when a speeding Mini Cooper rammed into a scooter carrying Iyas, Gopika and Devika. All three died in the collision.
The victims were pursuing their studies while working part-time at a craft shop in Thrikkakara.
The case has also sparked political controversy, with allegations circulating on social media that senior Congress leaders were attempting to help the driver avoid legal action.
On Saturday, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala expressed displeasure over sections of the media allegedly carrying baseless reports suggesting that efforts were being made to protect the accused.
Opposing the bail pleas, the prosecution told the court that prima facie evidence existed against the accused. It also submitted that tests of blood and urine samples had confirmed alcohol consumption.
The prosecution further informed the court that the car’s Event Data Recorder (EDR) had been sent for examination to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Arguing against bail, the prosecution said the driver, aged 19, would have understood the nature and consequences of his actions. It urged the court to deny bail while key investigative procedures remained pending.
Accepting the prosecution’s argument that the investigation was at a critical stage, the court rejected all three bail applications.
The allegations of political interference, along with the Home Minister’s criticism of media reports, have added another dimension to the case. The ongoing investigation and findings of the EDR examination are expected to be closely watched.
