2nd T20I Preview: India Eye 2-0 Lead as West Indies Look to Bounce Back in Ranchi

Ranchi, October 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

India will look to extend their lead in the five-match T20I series when they face West Indies in the second match at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday, with the visitors aiming to bounce back after a heavy defeat in the opener.

India made a commanding start in Lucknow, chasing down West Indies’ 171-run target in just 14.4 overs, powered by Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 102 off 43 balls.

With the hosts already 1-0 ahead, the team management has some selection decisions to make, particularly around Sanju Samson’s place at the top of the order and the bowling combination.

Samson has scored only 9, 7, 2 and 11 in his last four innings, increasing the pressure on the wicketkeeper-batter. With teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi included in the squad, India have an attacking alternative at the top of the order.

Sooryavanshi’s ability to take on bowlers during the powerplay could offer India another option alongside Abhishek Sharma, whose aggressive batting has been an important part of the team’s T20 approach. However, the management must decide whether Samson deserves another opportunity to regain form.

Iyer’s performance has eased concerns in the middle order. His maiden T20I century in the series opener ensured India were always in control of the chase and provided further impetus to the batting unit.

The bowling combination could also come under consideration after Mayank Yadav conceded 16 runs in his opening over in Lucknow. He eventually dismissed West Indies’ top-scorer Sherfane Rutherford, who made 56, but had an expensive outing overall.

Naman Dhir emerged as India’s leading bowler with 3/31, while Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel claimed two wickets each. India could consider an alternative pace combination, with Nitish Kumar Reddy among the options, although his use with the new ball has not always yielded the desired results.

India’s spin attack was particularly effective in the opening match. Kuldeep and Axar operated in tandem to restrict the West Indies batting line-up, while Dhir added another option with his off-spin.

West Indies, meanwhile, will need a much stronger batting effort to level the series. Shai Hope and Rutherford struck half-centuries in Lucknow, but three wickets fell during the powerplay before the pair rebuilt the innings.

Ranchi could provide another interesting challenge. Of the seven T20 matches played at the venue, four have been won by the team batting second and three by the side setting a target. The average first-innings score is 138, while the second-innings average stands at 111.

India’s 196/6 against Sri Lanka remains the highest T20 total at the venue, while New Zealand’s 155/3 against India is the highest successful chase. The surface is expected to be firm with an even grass covering, potentially allowing good carry for batters while offering some assistance to new-ball bowlers.

With Iyer leading a squad that combines established T20 players with younger options such as Sooryavanshi and Prince Yadav, Friday’s match could provide an indication of India’s plans for the remainder of the series.

The decisions on Samson and Mayank may be particularly significant as India balance the immediate objective of winning the series with the need to assess their options ahead of a busy T20I season.
