Actor Esha Deol has spoken out against the online trolling of veteran actors Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini over their interactions with paparazzi, arguing that the problem extends beyond individual photographers to those managing social media pages for engagement.
In an interview with IANS, Esha said photographers were often guided by the people running the pages that publish celebrity videos to attract likes and online traction. She argued that the root cause needed to be addressed rather than placing all the blame on the person taking pictures.
Comparing the situation to a child’s upbringing, Esha said photographers were sometimes acting under direction and that responsibility also lay with those encouraging such interactions.
The actor said she had experienced similar situations as part of her family and did not consider disrespectful behaviour towards senior artistes acceptable.
Describing veteran performers as pillars of the film industry, Esha said they deserved respect for their contribution to Indian cinema. She also drew a distinction between celebrities who enjoy playful exchanges with photographers and those who are uncomfortable with the attention.
“Give them that respect,” she said, adding that paparazzi should understand where light-hearted banter is welcome and where it is not.
Jaya Bachchan has frequently faced online criticism for expressing displeasure with photographers who direct celebrities to pose or look in different directions. Hema Malini has also faced criticism over her responses to paparazzi.
The debate highlights tensions around celebrity photography and the social media ecosystem, where clips of stars reacting to photographers can attract widespread attention and become subjects of online commentary.
Esha’s remarks call for a more respectful approach to interactions between photographers and actors, particularly those who do not welcome constant instructions or unsolicited attention.
