NDA leaders on Friday backed the notice directing actor Imran Khan to leave India over his alleged participation in the recent August Kranti Maidan protests in Mumbai, arguing that he is not an Indian citizen and that the law applies equally to everyone, including Bollywood actors and leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan said action could be taken if Imran, who is reportedly not an Indian citizen, participated in protests while staying in India on a work visa.
“If he (Imran Khan) is not an Indian citizen, if he is here on a work visa and trying to be part of illegal protests, then action will be taken against him. Everyone is equal before the law, be it CJP leaders or Bollywood actors,” Paswan said.
Jharkhand BJP spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo questioned Imran’s participation in the demonstrations, citing his reported American citizenship and work permit.
“Imran Khan is an American citizen, and he was staying in India with a work permit. Now he is taking part in Indian protests. Why should an American citizen participate in India’s protests? Why didn’t he take Indian citizenship? Why is he here just for work in films?” Shahdeo said.
He also referred to actor Aamir Khan and his former wife Kiran Rao, saying that one of Imran’s relatives had earlier expressed concerns about safety in India.
Citing a provision of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which he said prohibits foreigners from participating in protests in India, Shahdeo called for Imran’s immediate deportation.
In Chhattisgarh, BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj linked the protests to broader political developments, referring to the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya and the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
“There were two important issues of our nation: first was Lord Ram’s temple — the temple was built; there was no ounce of commotion; the other was Article 370 — people said that it would bring bloodshed, but there was no change,” he said.
Maharaj also criticised opposition to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, alleging that more than Rs 30,000 crore enters India through the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act framework to promote religious activities and organise protests. These allegations were made by the BJP MP.
“There are external forces which are working to sabotage PM Modi’s vision for a Viksit Bharat by 2047. These protests are not against PM Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah; these protests are against the nation,” Maharaj said.
BJP MP Rahul Sinha also called for Imran’s deportation, questioning why a foreign national visiting India for work should participate in a protest.
“He (Imran Khan) should be deported; why should a foreigner who is here for work be a part of such a protest?” Sinha said.
Janata Dal (United) leader Shyam Rajak said that only citizens of a country should participate in protests there.
“If someone is here from outside the country, either they are here for tourism or for education. They can’t be here for protests. You cannot come to a foreign nation and question their freedom; it’s illegal,” Rajak said.
Imran Khan was directed to leave India over his alleged participation in the August Kranti Maidan protests, which reportedly demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to the order issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Imran allegedly violated the Foreigners Act by participating in the demonstrations because he is not an Indian citizen and holds Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) status.
