The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will stage a march to the Raj Bhavan in Patna on August 19 to protest the alleged lathi-charge and firing during student demonstrations over irregularities in examinations.
The march will be led by RJD National Working President Tejashwi Yadav, with party MLAs, MLCs and workers expected to participate. It will begin from the RJD office on Veerchand Patel Path and proceed towards the Raj Bhavan.
Tejashwi announced the programme in Delhi on Wednesday after holding a meeting with RJD MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Addressing reporters, he questioned the government’s handling of the students’ grievances and sought clarity over the circumstances surrounding the alleged use of an AK-47 rifle during the firing in Siwan. He also questioned who authorised the police action against the protesters.
The RJD leader criticised the suspension of a lower-ranking constable, alleging that accountability had not been fixed at senior levels. He demanded action against senior officials and questioned why the Superintendent of Police had not been suspended.
Tejashwi said an RJD delegation had met the Director General of Police, who assured them that action would be taken, but alleged that the subsequent steps had been inadequate.
Accusing the government of allowing a “police raj” to prevail in Bihar, Tejashwi said the RJD would oppose any attempt to turn the state into a police state.
He also criticised the government for its alleged response to students injured during the protests, claiming that neither Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary nor the Deputy Chief Ministers visited them or enquired about their condition. He demanded an apology from the Chief Minister.
Tejashwi said Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had also raised the students’ issue in Parliament. He added that the RJD had reached out to leaders of several Opposition parties and urged them to visit Bihar and support the students’ demand for justice.
The RJD leader said the incident could not be allowed to pass without fixing responsibility, arguing that accountability was necessary to prevent similar action against protesters in the future.
The August 19 march is likely to intensify the political debate over the handling of student protests in Bihar. Tejashwi said the RJD would continue raising the issue until accountability was established.
