Celebrated filmmaker Subhash Ghai marked the 33rd anniversary of his iconic film ‘Khalnayak’ by reflecting on the creative idea that inspired the 1993 blockbuster, revealing that he wanted to explore the emotional journey of a man who becomes a villain.
Sharing his thoughts on the film’s milestone, Ghai said the central theme revolved around a character who transforms from “Ravan” to “Shri Ram” through his own conscience. He said the concept struck him even before he began writing the screenplay, describing Khalnayak as “the tragedy of a villain.”
“When Ravan in a character turns into Shri Ram because of his own consciousness. This theme clicked in my mind before I started writing the script of Khalnayak. It was a story of the tragedy of a villain. Even though it has been 33 years since casting Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit, it still feels fresh even today,” Ghai said.
He also expressed gratitude to composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, lyricist Anand Bakshi, cinematographer Ashok Mehta, choreographer Saroj Khan, costume designer Neeta Lulla, writer Kamlesh Pandey, and the film’s technical team for their contributions.
Starring Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit, Khalnayak emerged as one of Bollywood’s biggest hits, earning acclaim for its gripping storyline, memorable performances and chart-topping soundtrack. Over the years, the film has retained its cult status, with its characters and songs continuing to enjoy immense popularity.
The anniversary has also renewed interest in ‘Khalnayak 2’, which Ghai is co-producing. The sequel has already generated considerable buzz, with fans looking forward to a new chapter in one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic franchises.
