Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao on Friday demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that no individual is above the Constitution of India.
Rama Rao also called on the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged irregularities and order an independent investigation led by a sitting judge.
In a post on X, the BRS leader said no Indian citizen should be deprived of the right to vote and questioned the need to protect an individual at the cost of citizens’ constitutional rights.
“Nothing is greater than the Constitution of India. And no Indian citizen can be stripped of their right to vote. Gyanesh Kumar must go! No individual is above the institution,” Rama Rao said.
He further asserted that the country’s democratic institutions were bigger than any individual and called for accountability over the alleged electoral irregularities.
BRS Deputy Leader in the Telangana Assembly T. Harish Rao also demanded the CEC’s resignation, arguing that the Election Commission must function as an impartial institution rather than a shield for those in power.
Citing Articles 324, 325 and 326 of the Constitution, along with the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951, Harish Rao stressed the need for a credible, independent and inclusive electoral system. He said the CEC should take responsibility if the poll panel failed to command public confidence.
Meanwhile, the BRS has announced a protest outside the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Hyderabad on Saturday, demanding Kumar’s resignation.
The party has alleged large-scale voter deletions during the SIR process in constituencies represented by its MLAs and sought a comprehensive, independent inquiry into the matter. It also plans to take its campaign to Delhi after the Hyderabad protest.
