Goa Police have registered an unnatural death (UD) case following the demise of veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar and will record statements from his family members and other relevant individuals as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and is being investigated by Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Naik.

According to reports, Patekar was brought from his residence in Dona Paula to Manipal Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

As part of the investigation, police will conduct a panchnama, examine the post-mortem report prepared at Goa Medical College (GMC), and record statements from family members and others who may have relevant information to establish the circumstances and cause of death.

Officials are examining the available medical and other evidence. If the investigation establishes that the death occurred naturally, the case may be closed. However, if any suspicious circumstances or evidence of foul play emerge, further legal action may follow.

Earlier on Thursday, Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital said the actor had been brought to the hospital after his condition deteriorated.

“We tried our best here, but he was brought dead, and then we had to file a police case,” the doctor told the media.

Salkar also said that, according to the information available to him, Patekar had a history of heart disease and was taking medication.

The veteran actor died early Thursday morning after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. Doctors at Manipal Hospital attempted to revive him through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for around 45 minutes, but he was declared dead at 5.20 a.m.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday morning, after which his mortal remains were handed over to the family for the last rites.

Patekar’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across the film industry, with colleagues and admirers remembering his celebrated acting career and contributions to social work.

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, the actor belonged to a Marathi family. His father, Gajanan, also known as Dinkar Patekar, was a textile painter and businessman who died when the actor was 28.

His mother, Nirmala Patekar, also known as Sanjanabai Patekar, was a homemaker who remained with him until her death on January 29, 2019, at the age of 99.
