India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtain down on a 13-year career in the longest format during which he claimed 229 wickets in 64 matches.
The 36-year-old made the announcement through a video message posted on his Instagram account, saying he was bidding farewell to the whites but not to the memories associated with Test cricket.
Born in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, Shami made his Test debut against the West Indies on November 6, 2013. His last appearance in the format came against Australia in June 2023.
He finished his Test career with five five-wicket hauls. His best bowling figures were 6/56 against Australia in Perth in December 2018.
In his emotional farewell message, Shami thanked the Almighty, his family, friends, coaches, strength trainers, physiotherapists and support staff for standing by him throughout his journey.
Describing his 13-year career as a journey marked by hard work, injuries and comebacks, he said the challenges had shaped him as a person. He acknowledged that he had fallen and suffered injuries along the way but had repeatedly returned to face the challenges.
Shami’s international career in recent years was affected by recurring injuries, which kept him out of the Indian team across formats. His retirement brings an end to his Test journey after more than three years without an appearance in the format.
At the domestic level, he represented Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and played zonal cricket for East Zone.
Shami’s 229 Test wickets place him among India’s notable fast bowlers, with his performances overseas, particularly against Australia, forming an important part of his career.
