Indian men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh has described the atmosphere at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar as electrifying, saying playing an international tournament in Punjab, close to his home and in front of family and supporters, has made the experience particularly special.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy, Harmanpreet, popularly known as ‘Sarpanch’, said hosting an international tournament of this stature in Punjab for the first time was a matter of pride.
“The stadium is jam-packed and the energy of the crowd is electrifying. It boosts the team’s morale to a great extent. I started my hockey here and representing the country on the same turf is a big thing. Interacting with everyone’s families around makes it even more special,” he said.
The two-time Olympic bronze medallist, having won medals at Tokyo and Paris, also expressed confidence in the team’s progress. Reflecting on the match against Japan, he said such challenging encounters tested players’ patience and ability to remain composed.
Harmanpreet said India maintained a balanced approach during the first three quarters without scoring or conceding before raising the tempo in the final quarter. He stressed that maintaining focus and a strong mindset throughout the 60 minutes was crucial.
Looking ahead to the important clash against Malaysia, he said the contest could determine the pool toppers, with both teams having won three matches each. He added that India’s preparations were focused on its own strengths, while past encounters against Malaysia provided valuable lessons.
The captain said friends had been sending him videos of the packed stadium and spectators waiting outside, reflecting the enthusiasm for hockey in Punjab.
Harmanpreet, who also serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in Punjab Police, appealed to fans to attend the remaining matches with their families and children and cheer for the Indian team. Speaking in Punjabi, he urged people to support the national side on home ground and said such exposure could also inspire children to take up sports.
