The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would hear on November 3 a plea concerning a pregnant journalist’s allegation that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi grabbed and pulled her during the INDIA bloc’s march on the court premises over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The matter was mentioned before Chief Justice of India Surya Kant by senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, who pointed out that the application had not yet been listed for hearing. The CJI-led Bench clarified that notice had already been issued and fixed November 3 for taking up the matter.
The journalist, Richa Parashar, who works with a news website, alleged that Gandhi grabbed her hand and pulled her while she was covering the Opposition leaders’ march on October 12. She further claimed that security personnel pushed her, causing her to fall. Parashar, who is three months pregnant, was subsequently hospitalised.
The Congress has rejected the allegations, describing them as politically motivated. Party leaders and supporters have also circulated videos of the incident, questioning whether the available visuals establish that Gandhi pushed the journalist.
The case comes amid a separate legal challenge seeking safeguards against political demonstrations in and around the Supreme Court premises.
On October 15, a Bench comprising CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notice on the plea and directed that CCTV footage and other digital evidence relating to the incident be preserved.
The INDIA bloc march, which included Gandhi and other Opposition leaders, followed the CJI’s refusal to meet Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over their concerns regarding the SIR exercise.
The CJI had advised the leaders to pursue the established legal process, observing that holding a meeting to discuss pending cases would be inconsistent with the constitutional principle of separation of powers.
The allegations against Gandhi remain contested, and the scheduled hearing is the next step in the legal proceedings.
