Indian para-cyclist Arshad Shaikh is recovering after undergoing surgery for a displaced fracture of his left femur sustained in a crash during the men’s time trial at the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Shaikh, who represented India at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, is receiving treatment at the Chutoen General Medical Center in Shizuoka Prefecture. He fell during the event last Wednesday, injuring his previously operated left residual limb.
The injury is particularly significant for Shaikh, an above-knee amputee who relies on a prosthesis for mobility and competitive cycling. His recovery and rehabilitation requirements will be assessed as his treatment progresses.
Indian Ambassador to Japan Nagma Mohammed Mallick visited Shaikh at the medical facility on Monday and wished him a speedy recovery. She assured the athlete and his team that the Indian Embassy would provide the necessary assistance until he is medically cleared to return home.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India are coordinating with the embassy and maintaining regular contact with the cyclist to ensure he receives appropriate support.
Shaikh was India’s sole representative in para-cycling at the Games. Following the accident, team chief physician Dr Ameya Kagali had confirmed that the athlete was in a stable condition but required surgery for the displaced fracture.
With the procedure completed, the immediate priority is to ensure that Shaikh receives continued medical care in Japan before travelling back to India.
The extent of the rehabilitation required and the timeline for his return to competitive cycling remain uncertain.
