New Delhi, October 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal on Tuesday said the INDIA Bloc would proceed with its campaign seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the Modi government of obstructing the Opposition’s planned public programme in the national capital.

Venugopal alleged that permission to hold the programme had been denied at two proposed venues — the Ashoka Hotel lawn and Ramlila Maidan. He claimed the hotel initially agreed to host the event before police intervention, while permission for Ramlila Maidan, which the Opposition had booked for nine days, was subsequently withdrawn.

Questioning the reasons behind the decisions, Venugopal accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of protecting the Chief Election Commissioner. These were allegations made by the Congress leader; the account provided did not include a response from the government or Delhi Police.

“Modi and Amit Shah are so scared. We announced a public impeachment,” Venugopal told reporters, referring to the Opposition’s proposed campaign over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

He said the INDIA Bloc would identify an alternative venue and announce its revised programme shortly, insisting that the withdrawal of permissions would not force the Opposition to abandon its plans.

Venugopal said around 21 political parties were expected to participate in the programme scheduled for November 1. A curtain-raiser event featuring a mock removal of Gyanesh Kumar was planned for October 30, he added.

The proposed campaign marks another escalation in the confrontation between the Opposition and the government over the Election Commission and the Chief Election Commissioner’s role.

“We will do it. You just wait,” Venugopal said, reiterating that the INDIA Bloc intended to continue its campaign despite the venue-related setbacks.
