The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday criticised the Opposition INDIA bloc over its proposed November 1 rally in Delhi, accusing it of disregarding concerns raised by traders about the potential impact on business and Hindu festival celebrations.
VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal urged citizens to remain vigilant against what he described as “anti-India and anti-Hindu” activities. In posts on X, he alleged that the decision to proceed with the rally despite appeals for postponement reflected a disregard for religious sentiments and the interests of the trading community.
Bansal pointed out that November 1 coincides with Ahoi Ashtami, a Hindu fasting festival observed by mothers for the well-being and longevity of their children. He also alleged that protests scheduled around major festivals, including Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali, could disrupt celebrations and affect the economy.
The VHP spokesperson directed particularly sharp criticism at the Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents, using derogatory political labels to accuse them of targeting Hindu traditions and traders. These allegations formed part of the organisation’s response to the Opposition’s decision to go ahead with the demonstration.
The rally is scheduled to take place at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on November 1. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi reiterated on Monday that the protest would proceed, linking it to allegations of electoral wrongdoing and demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Gandhi also sought to reassure Delhi’s traders, saying he understood their concerns while blaming the government for disruptions affecting the capital.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) wrote to Gandhi again on Tuesday, requesting that the rally be rescheduled until after Diwali. The organisation also sent a copy of its letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, asking him to discuss the matter with INDIA bloc allies.
The dispute has brought competing concerns over political protest, business activity and festival preparations into focus ahead of the scheduled demonstration.
