US President Donald Trump has claimed that he discussed renaming the Atlantic Ocean on Google Maps with Google CEO Sundar Pichai, but the Indian-American executive advised against the idea, citing the number of countries covered by the ocean.
Speaking at a midterm election rally in Clemson, South Carolina, on Wednesday, Trump revisited his efforts to rename geographical landmarks, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Strait of Hormuz.
“So we seriously looked at the Atlantic Ocean, and I called Google Maps, who were really great with the lake,” Trump told supporters.
Recalling his conversation with Pichai, he said he had asked whether Google could handle renaming the Atlantic Ocean. According to Trump, Pichai replied, “Ocean’s a difference, sir. You know, they cover a lot of… They cover really a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.”
Trump said he would probably abandon the idea, asking the audience whether the Atlantic should retain its existing name. He then floated another proposal, saying, “We’re going to call it the American Ocean,” before joking about how Europe would react.
He added that he would consider putting either his name or America’s name only on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The president also joked about renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait” while discussing the conflict with Iran. The strategic waterway is a critical route for global oil shipments and has been central to US-Iran tensions.
Trump claimed that US military operations had destroyed Iran’s nuclear enrichment capacity and reiterated that Tehran would never obtain a nuclear weapon. He also predicted that oil prices would soon fall.
Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America shortly after taking office in January 2025. Google Maps subsequently adopted the new name for users in the United States. Trump also told the rally that he had recently renamed a lake “Lake America”.
Pichai, who was born in Chennai, attended Trump’s inauguration in January 2025 and a White House dinner for technology executives in September that year.
The rally at Clemson’s T. Ed Garrison Arena was part of Trump’s campaign activities ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
