Amritsar, October 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Punjab Agriculture Department, in a joint operation with GST Intelligence, has seized approximately 4,000 bags of agricultural-grade urea fertilizer from an industrial unit in Amritsar. An FIR has been registered in the case, and two persons have been arrested, officials said on Saturday.

The raid was conducted on October 16, 2026, at the premises of Mridul Chemicals in Ball Kalan on Majitha Road as part of the state government’s efforts to prevent the misuse and illegal diversion of subsidised agricultural-grade urea for industrial purposes.

The operation was carried out under the directions of Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian and Director of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Punjab, Gurjit Singh Brar, under the leadership of Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh.

During the raid, officials seized around 4,000 bags of agricultural-grade urea manufactured by Hindustan Fertilizers Limited, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited, and KRIBHCO Fertilizers Limited. The GST Intelligence team also examined the industrial unit’s official records and took relevant documents into its possession.

DSP Yadwinder Singh said an FIR had been registered under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, the Fertiliser Control Order, 1985, and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

He said the operation continued until late at night and that two persons had been arrested so far. Further investigation is underway to establish the facts and determine responsibility.

The DSP said a fair and comprehensive investigation would be conducted and strict legal action would follow against anyone found guilty.

Chief Agriculture Officer, Amritsar, Amarjit Singh Dosanjh, explained that agricultural-grade urea is a regulated and subsidised fertilizer for which the government provides substantial financial support to benefit farmers. Its use is therefore restricted to agricultural purposes.

In contrast, technical-grade urea is supplied by fertilizer companies for industrial applications and does not receive the same government subsidy as agricultural-grade urea.

Dosanjh said samples of the seized fertilizer had been collected and sent for testing. He added that the Punjab Government was committed to protecting farmers’ interests and that the department would continue inspections and raids to prevent the misuse of subsidised agricultural inputs.

He warned that any industrial unit found illegally using or diverting subsidised agricultural-grade urea would face strict action under the Fertiliser Control Order, 1985, the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and other applicable legal provisions.

Members of the GST Intelligence team present during the operation included Gagan Bahl, Senior Intelligence Officer Prashant Joshi, Navdeep Sidhu and Intelligence Officer Amarinder Singh.

Representatives of the Agriculture Department included Agriculture Development Officers Balwinder Singh Chhina, Harbhinder Singh, Gurjot Singh Gill, Parjit Singh, Mandeep Singh, Gurjit Singh and Gurbaj Singh; Agriculture Sub-Inspector Ashwani Badwal; ASI Sarwan Singh; and ASI Jasbir Singh, Police Post In-charge, Ball Kalan, Police Station Kambo.
