Union MSME Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) patron Jitan Ram Manjhi on Saturday criticised Mokama MLA Anant Singh over his controversial “nine murders” remark and demanded an inquiry into the statement, followed by appropriate action.
“If Anant Singh claims that he committed murders to help Nitish Kumar, then he has acted wrongly. If he truly wanted to help, he should have done so through positive actions. I demand an inquiry into his statement, followed by appropriate action against him,” Manjhi said.
Meanwhile, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) National Working President Sanjay Jha said the party had taken note of both Singh’s original remarks and his subsequent clarification. He added that the party’s Bihar unit was closely monitoring the developments.
The JD-U has not announced any disciplinary action against Singh so far.
The controversy erupted after Singh, speaking to a media agency on Friday, described the sacrifices he claimed to have made while supporting Nitish Kumar. His remarks were widely interpreted as an admission that he had orchestrated nine murders to benefit the JD-U leader.
Following the political backlash, Singh addressed a press conference in Patna and said his comments had been misinterpreted. He clarified that he was referring to the killings of nine of his aides after he aligned himself with Nitish Kumar, rather than claiming that he had arranged their murders.
Singh said his association with Nitish Kumar dated back to a period when Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav were political allies. According to Singh, Nitish Kumar had helped secure an Assembly election ticket for his brother by speaking to Lalu Prasad Yadav.
Singh said he continued to support Nitish Kumar even after the two leaders parted ways and subsequently left Lalu Prasad’s party to align himself with Kumar.
Recalling that period, the Mokama MLA claimed he had suffered serious personal losses after joining forces with Nitish Kumar. He said he had been shot at and that nine of his aides had been killed.
The controversy has also unfolded amid tensions within the JD-U over the Bihar Legislative Council elections. Singh had earlier questioned the party’s decision to field Neeraj Kumar, while highlighting his own contributions and long-standing support for Nitish Kumar.
Manjhi’s demand for an inquiry has added to the political pressure surrounding Singh’s remarks, while the JD-U leadership has said it is monitoring the matter.
