Chandigarh, October 14, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Chandigarh MP and former Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari has called on the Chandigarh administration to urgently resolve five long-pending issues that, he said, have remained unresolved for more than 25 years. Tewari made the demand while inaugurating an extensive CCTV surveillance project in Sector 19 aimed at enhancing public safety and security.

Tewari identified the five key issues as the ban on share-wise sale of property, ownership rights for residents of relief and rehabilitation colonies, permission for need-based changes in Chandigarh Housing Board dwellings and apartments, removal of the Lal Dora around Chandigarh’s 22 villages, and resolution of the long-standing demands of residents of cooperative group housing societies and other group housing societies.

He said he had repeatedly raised the issue of what he described as an erroneous ban on share-wise property sales. He also stressed the need to grant ownership rights to people living in relief and rehabilitation colonies and allow need-based changes in Chandigarh Housing Board homes and apartments.

Addressing the gathering, Tewari said his persistent efforts in Parliament, through parliamentary standing committees and in discussions with the Governor of Punjab and the Chandigarh administration had prompted the Union Home Ministry to seek the administration’s views on all five issues.

“However, even after that, they have been dragging their feet on all these issues without providing any relief to the people of Chandigarh,” he said.

Tewari strongly urged the administration to prioritise the grant of ownership rights to residents of relief and rehabilitation colonies, asserting that significant progress had been made on the issue through his continued efforts.

He called on the administration to overcome what he described as lethargy and inertia and work towards constructive and positive solutions at the earliest. According to Tewari, the prolonged delay in resolving these matters has made life difficult for Chandigarh residents.

Questioning the effectiveness of the city’s administrative machinery, Tewari asked why such an extensive bureaucratic structure and infrastructure existed if even basic public concerns could not be addressed.

“Chandigarh has almost one IAS or IPS officer per 70,000 of population but the delivery of governance to the ordinary citizens is abysmal, while the neighbouring districts of Mohali and Panchkula, which are only run by one SSP and one Deputy Commissioner, actually deliver better governance and services to the people,” Tewari said.

The event was attended by Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky and Sector 19 Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) president Bhupinder Singh Gill, among others.
